In the past few decades, picture books have become a valuable and sophisticated tool for teaching and learning in the secondary school classroom. Often, picture books tackle serious and/or sensitive issues that are better suited for older students, and even adults.
Picture books offer a visual, safe option for students who are visual learners and for all students who wish to engage in reading about various topics in a meaningful way. When well-integrated into teaching, 'picture fiction' can offer pathways to deeper emotional connections and high order thinking skills for all secondary students.
