NVOL Digital Learning Commons: Indigenizing the Curriculum

This guide from the University of Toronto is designed to help Initial Teacher Education students find materials that centre or focus on First Nations, Métis, and Inuit worldviews, experiences and knowledges for teaching in the K-12 classroom.

The University of Lethbridge's Faculty of Education sponsored the development of this First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) Curriculum Collection. It is a collection of lessons and resources designed to help pre and in-service teachers incorporate FNMI content in their teaching across subjects and grade levels. One can browse through the collection or search by categories (e.g. subject, title, key word, grade, etc.).

Jo Chrona created this site to help educators in British Columbia understand how they might incorporate the First Peoples Principles of Learning (FPPL) into their classrooms and schools. Some educators will see that the Principles reflect what they already believe, and are doing in their schools and classrooms. Other educators will see concepts embedded in the principles that challenge some of the post-industrial Euro-centric beliefs about education.

British Columbia is home to 203 First Nations communities and an amazing diversity of Indigenous languages; approximately 50% of the First Peoples’ languages of Canada are spoken in BC. You can access indexes of all the languages, First Nations through the top navigation on all pages of this website.

In this atlas, you will find outstanding reference maps of Indigenous Canada, as well as a section devoted to Truth and Reconciliation, including detailed pages on many aspects of the topic with contemporary and historical photography, maps and more. There’s also a glossary of common Indigenous terms. This atlas was created by The Royal Canadian Geographical Society in conjunction with the Assembly of First Nations, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, the Métis Nation, the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation and Indspire.

This is a resource for North Americans (and others) to find out more about local Indigenous territories and languages.
